William H. McRaven, a retired four-star admiral, and former Navy SEAL slammed President Trump’s characterization of the media as “the enemy of the American people,” calling that sentiment the “greatest threat to democracy” he’s ever seen.
That’s coming from a man who’s seen major threats to democracy.
McRaven, who was commander of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command, organized and oversaw the highly risky operation that killed Osama bin Laden almost six years ago. The admiral from Texas had tapped a special unit of Navy SEALs to carry out the May 2011 raid on the elusive terrorist’s hideout, a high-walled compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, The Washington Post’s Craig Whitlock reported shortly after bin Laden’s death.
McRaven left the military in 2014 after about four decades and later got to be chancellor of the University of Texas System. The UT-Austin former student, who has a four-year certification in news coverage, tended to a group at the college’s Moody College of Communication on Tuesday.
“We should challenge this announcement and this conclusion that the news media is the foe of the American individuals,” McRaven stated, as indicated by the Daily Texan. “This feeling might be the best danger to popular government in my lifetime.”
“To be a decent pioneer, you must be a decent communicator,” he included. “As a pioneer, you need to convey your aim each shot you get, and in the event that you neglect to do that, you will pay dearly.”
McRaven’s comments come in the midst of Twitter assaults on the media by the president, who has upbraided as “FAKE NEWS” a few negative stories about his organization. In a generally shared tweet Friday, Trump called the media, naming the New York Times, NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN, “the adversary of the American People!”
In another tweet that day, Trump cited moderate talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who applauded the president’s news meeting the day preceding amid which he went up against the media.
“One of the most effective press conferences I’ve ever seen!” says Rush Limbaugh. Many agree. Yet FAKE MEDIA calls it differently! Dishonest,” Trump tweeted.
